NEEDED: New York-Area Free-Range Parents Who Can Be on TV Tomorrow Morning

Hey Folks — A national TV show taping here in NYC needs Free-Range Parents to come on tomorrow morning and talk about why Free-Ranging is not nuts/crazy/super-dangerous/the worst idea ever, etc. etc. If you are around and want to do this (it’s over by 10 a.m., in midtown)– fantastic. Please drop an email to: Christie Bear christiembear@gmail.com .

Thanks! – L

Dang. I wish I lived in that part of the world. I would love to give free range parenting a shout out. It’s so important for kids and their development to engage in free play.

Good luck with your project, Lenore.

Good luck! I was a free range kid allowed to play in the playground with just my younger sister when I was…..oh, six or seven? In the Bronx. In the 1970’s! However did we survive? Sorry my kids are too old and too far away to participate! I think it’s funny how you’re charging for this service….good way to get attention to the cause.

    When will this be aired?

Why, in the last couple of days, is there no link to comments in the email I get? I decided to come directly to the website today, and I see that people have been able to comment. is this some new stupid “feature” from AOL, whom I keep threatening to dump?

This is common up here in Harlem. We’re a supposedly ‘dangerous’ neighborhood, but kids go to bodega, hang out on stoops, etc. all the time

You need help really you do …. I live in the sticks of nj and would never let my kids run free !!! Your kids should be taken from you … Child endangerment …. I live next to “freaks that like kids” low life losers… Would never let them out and about shame on you …

You might as well type in the address of where you’ll be having your play dates …

Michelle – maybe you should have your kids taken away for stunting their growth and development. Oh and Lenore does publish the days and locations of her playdates so that other children can benefit from social interaction. I feel so sorry for your kids stuck inside and withheld from such an educating and enriching childhood!

Michelle, why are you even on this site? I don’t think it’s the one for you…..

HI Michelle: In another place at this site is a very informative set of crime statistics. . . you’ll find that 2012 is a much safer place (despite the media noise) than when you were a child.

So it goes. . .best, Captain America.

I’m all for free range kids, but I know plenty of kids that are not free range that grow up perfectly happy, healthy, intelligent, and responsible. There are alternatives to free range that work quite well. So let’s not assume that because someone won’t let their kids run around free in a big city that their kids will be “stunted in their growth” somehow. Their kids will probably be perfectly fine. They just don;t know or understand the real statistics. Michelle is obviously new here and exploring the site and at first it can be shocking. But if you’re still reading, Michelle, I recommend just keep reading and letting it sink in. You may find someday you’ll find there are a few things you’ll find useful.

I am all for this. I grew up with great structure and minimal supervision and riding the subways at age 10 unsupervised from Queens to Manhattan for dentist appointments. My parents raised my sister and I with enough book smarts, street smarts, and common sense to be able to do this so young. My husband and I will also raise our son to the same way.

@Michelle: At what age will your kids be allowed to go out and run free?

How will you determine that they are responsible?

  14. Lollipoplover September 13, 2012 at 6:52 pm #

@James, You are right. There are many ways to raise kids with great results. The problem with comments like Michelle’s is that she thinks kids should be taken away from those with differing parenting styles. (*see “Your kids should be taken away from you…Child Endangerment).
Teaching children responsibility at early ages and giving them incremental freedoms as they mature should not be ILLEGAL. Just because it differs from your parenting style DOESN’T MAKE IT DANGEROUS. You can keep your kids in your house and away from “freaks that like kids low life losers”. But sadly, these low life losers are often people you know.

I welcome your comments, even if it is, after all no kidding, it makes a noticeable difference in some apps like Gmail or the browser really speedy.

I’m curious to find out what blog system you happen to be using? I’m experiencing some minor security issues with my latest site and
I would like to find something more secure. Do you have any recommendations?
