Thanks for sounding this important note about treating conflict as too traumatizing for the gently reared to be compelled to face. There are so many toxic implications that proceed from this trend, not the least of which is political. If conflict is an intolerable violation of your emotional comfort zone, you avoid poltical discourse that entails significant disagreement and, worse, take it for granted that such discourse can only be hostile and aggressive – an unfortunate assumption shared be many who don’t recognize emotional comfort as a value at all. Put simply, clinging to stroking and stuffed animals makes people as blinkered and resistent to serious democratic questioning and engagement as clinging to arbitrary authority and guns. College, where the mind is supposed to be acquiring scope and discipline, shouldn’t encourage either habit.
