Weekend Viewing: Nancy Grace, Casey Anthony, Aaron Sorkin and Us

Readers — This is a clip from HBO’s  The Newsroom, about a news team deciding if and how to obsess about the Casey Anthony case. Of course it’s fiction, but boy — writer Sorkin really understands how TV works. (He should!) The part where the expert in the news meeting breaks down a few minutes of the Nancy Grace show should be required viewing in every journalism school in America. Heck, in every SCHOOL in America, so we get a little insight into what’s being thrown at us and what it does to our brains. And thanks to Donald Christensen for sending! – L

I don’t know how long Nancy Grace has been around, but I first heard her during the Duke lacrosse false-rape-accusation case. She struck me from the beginning as a transparent fraud.

Thanks, Lenore, for this clip. What strikes me is that the producer explaining why America was mesmerized by the Casey Anthony story and how it was presented honed in on this: The viewer would believe that Caylee deserved HER, the viewer, rather than Casey as her mother. THAT is the attitude that is far too pervasive in the USA and that results in parents doing a fine job being scrutinized, chastised and investigated by other parents (the do-gooder) and DCF/CPS even when a child is NOT in danger and is NOT being harmed or in ACTUAL risk of being harmed, simply because someone else would have made a different parenting decision. Parents must come together and push back to affect public policy and laws just as Free Range Kids works to affect public perception (and THANK YOU for all you do)! A typical example of why I can’t stand anything Sorkin does- rapid fire, unbelievable, preachy dialogue.

I was invited to a nice luncheon for a local group that supports women in government and business. Nancy Grace was the speaker. I couldn’t possibly support that fear mongerer and faux journalist so I turned it down.

I watched Nancy Grace in all her sensationalist glory, one time.

My first experience with Nancy Grace was during the Danielle Van Dam/ David Westerfield case. This was back when TruTV was still about the legal cases and not Spike TV redux. I miss CourtTV.

She seemed passionate back then and not so high-strung.

I don’t think that junk is being broadcasted here… Although, I did accidently discover The Doctors in the tv guide the other day: at 7 in the morning! Who’d ever watch that?!

Nancy Grace does not want intelligent detractors on her show. She HATES someone showing her up.

My favorite Disgrace clip is this one:
