No, not kids directing the space program. A documentary maker from Austria is coming to do a film about Free-Range Kids and she needs to find a Free-Range (ish) family in Houston. If you belong to one, or know of one, please contact her pronto! She’s practically boarding the plane! Her name is Katinka and here’s her email:  katinka.nowotny@orf.at

    Danke Schoen!— Lenore

I just checked up on Ms. Nowotny .. it is not unknown that that journalists put a (political or otherwise) spin on their stories, but i canot find anything in particualr .. i believe i even saw a few of her pieces ..

this might be your first journalist working for state owned TV .. 😎

You might try contacting the hipmamas of Houston. You can find them through meetup.com. I was a member when we lived in Houston last year, and it’s a pretty level-headed group, so finding some Free-Rangers shouldn’t be too hard.

If she wants to take a short 2 hour drive on over to Austin, we’re here! And our yard is a perfect free-range yard with it’s various rope swings and old playground equipment. You’ve seen our slide!

I am sorry, I know what I am commenting about doesn’t directly apply to this but I just wanted to tell you that I really admire what you are doing. I had never heard the term “free range kids” till I stopped by your blog and I thought that it was really interesting. I myself was a free range kid. (I am now 21 so it wasn’t really that long ago) My parents had rules about what I could and could not do, like most parents. But things were so much more relaxed back then, my parents didn’t think twice about booting me out of the house for hours on end with the comment ” be home before dark.” I really feel like kids are too coddled these days, the media makes a big deal if something bad happens to a child and yes it is horrible, but that is one child in what millions? That shouldn’t mean that everyone should lock up there children and not let them out without a watchful eye. I am friends with kids who where coddled and watched incessantly. They can’t do anything for themselves! They can play video games with the best of them but do their own laundry…good luck. I think it is crazy! Parents today are raising dependent children…

      katinka –

Take Interstate 10 east of downtown Houston to the Waco St. exit in 5th Ward on a weekend afternoon. Go five blocks south to Buck Street, turn left and go down to blocks to Emile. By this time you will have seen the old sheet-metal rice mill with the big painting of an onion and the huge sign that says “FARMART” on top. Wunderbar big-ass community garden, complete with a sand playground with lots of very dangerous climbing opportunities made from scrap lumber with lots of splinters. The kids love it. We planted a hundred or so chiles and eggplants yesterday and ate a couple of gallons of Swiss chard and potatos in chicken-leg and smoked-sausage stock.

As you don’t give out an email address on your blog, Lenore, I’m reduced to placing the contents here:
