Today’s Free-Range cartoon, as seen in the brilliant Baby Blues. What a great comic strip that is! And alas, I can’t figure out how to shrink this to fit my screen here, so I will give you the punchline: “To run a background check on Amy’s parents.” (Sorry — the comic shows up full screen when I preview it, but then in real life the page cuts it off.) L.

OMG, this is real life! I met a family the other day (at a friend’s house). The parents still accompany their 7 year old daughter to playdates and birthday parties. He was telling us that recently the daughter was invited to a playdate. They arrived and he said it was clear that the family was not expecting he and his wife to stay (something about how they let the daughter in and then stood on the porch and told the parents to come back around 4:30.) He was NOT comfortable with this but didn’t know what else to do . . . so he went to his car and ran a background check (he’s a DA) on the family using 5 different databases. When they came up “clean” he decided it was ok to let his daughter stay there to play. True story, I could not make this stuff up!

Rachel, OMG is right!! Beam me back to planet Earth! Was his last name Focker?

Regarding the comic strip, I can’t figure out how to find the punchline. I see only the first 2 frames and when I click the link, I get a different comic.

You can right click, then click on view image. In the rest of the frame, the mother says, “To run a background check on Amy’s parents.”

The last frame (there were only 2) ended with the mom replying, “To run a background check on Amy’s parents.”

This was part of a series that started a couple of days ago. At the last sleepover, the kids (supposed to be around 8, I think) had watched an R-rated movie while the parents texted occasionally from the next room to make sure everything was ok.

Funny the mom didn’t think to call the parents this time and ask how they’d be supervising the party and what the planned activities were. 😉

Man, you’d think a DA of all people would understand that people who pass criminal background checks might still do things you consider inappropriate. But TALKING about it is just too hard!

      Great comic.

P.S. You can resize images in pretty much any image software out there. A couple of free choices would be flickr and picasa.

It was in today’s Los Angeles Times, and the moment I saw it, I thought “Free Range Kids” here we come! Hmm, passed Dun & Bradstreet, finger prints to FBI came back “no record”. Scan of their Netflix account shows no inappropriate movies. Logged into TV set box, parental controls enabled. All systems green and go! (but by then the child has had a quarrel with the prospective sleepover host and wouldn’t think of setting foot in the other child’s house.)
