    “Take Our Kids to the Park Day” Photo Request — And Where Send ‘Em

    Hi Readers — Just talking to a reporter who wondered: Are there any photos of “Take Our Children to the Park…And Leave Them There Day”? If you have some, and if you’d like to see them in the newspaper, or even here on the blog, could you please send them to me at freerangepics@gmail.com?

    As I told the reporter: “But the parents weren’t THERE! So how could they take pictures?” But maybe, somehow, somewhere, some pictures were snapped. And if not — there’s always next year. Thanks!  — L.

      If the kids had cameras (or, more likely nowadays, camera phones) they might have taken pictures.

      As for sending pictures, the easiest way would be to send them directly to your email. The kindest way would be to upload them to a photohosting site FIRST, and THEN send the link to your email so that you don’t have to figure out how to post the file from your computer.

      I don’t have photos and I don’t know how anyone else has photos if they left the park. I’m just sayin’…

      Next time I send my daughter to the park alone I will send a camera with her! 🙂

      Did we take photos of other people’s kids? So we can be arrested on suspicion of pedaphilia? Call me a paranoid chicken. *sigh*

      However, I just uploaded my favorite photo from when I visited a park in Paris. This structure is made of rope and so it’s like climbing on netting. Every other child climbing makes the entire thing bounce and wobble. I got up about 4 feet and was terrified and climbed down. Note that there are only two parent-age people in this photo. The guy way in the back sitting on a bench and me the photographer. The rest are kids. And if they fall, that dusting of sand over concrete will be unforgiving. Spot the complete absence of fretting parents.

      Hey, that looks just like one of the parks my kids go to after school! In Spain they’re actually quite common (my sis has one just like that around the corner from her house). But I’ve found a few new ones around here that made me really gasp. Let me see if I can get some pics and figure out how to link them here…

      We have a couple of these at the park/beach at which I spend many looooong summer days with my grandson. In Grand Rapids (well, Walker really I guess) Michigan.

      And, did I post ages ago during the whole old-timey merry-go-round discussion that the one that was broken in our old neighborhood park got FIXED?! They did not take it out! I was flabbergasted and ecstatic. I was sure it would be gone this spring, but nope… fixed!!!

      I was pretty proud to hear that my best friend’s parents dropped her kids off at the swimming pool Saturday for 4 hours on their own. 15, 13, and 10 They came home in one piece and exhausted. Nothing went wrong (fully knowing that one would tattle on the other given the chance) and no one thought anything worng with it. WooHoo!

      Seriously? I started going to the pool by myself at 8. 400m on the bike,lock it up, give card to staff, receive lock, go to changeroom, change, lock up clothes, attend 45 mins lessons and then free swim the rest of the morning before showering, changing, and riding back. Every morning, 5 days a week, all summer, every summer until I was 11, by which time my brother (2 years younger) had been joining me for 2 years.

      Never saw a hint of my mum or dad the whole time. The worst thing that happened to me was a bump on the head when I slipped in the shower (or changeroom, I can’t remember). I do remember lots of concerned, naked, adult males rushing to help me.

      We now live about the same distance from a Wave Pool centre, and as soon as my son shows me he’s capable of doing the same, he’ll have carte blanche to go on his own.
