found your blog while trying to find why parents don’t let kids climb trees anymore. Well done. How can it be that my boys are the only ones that climb trees? Other parents are amazed, but it is sad that it shoud be like that. I read an article in Atlantic Monthly years ago that summed it up well, superkids just don’t have the imagaine that freerange kids have.

Read it, and loved it.
Just tonight my (more protective) husband and I clashed over letting our 4 1/2 year old play outside at our apartment complex. It’s a small town and there’s a playground right out back. He thinks 4 is too young, but I don’t, mainly because my son asked me for the chance and demonstrated that he knows the rules.
Hopefully, every time William comes back just fine will put my husband a little more at ease.
Trina: I felt SO sorry for that poor mom, and how demonized she was.
I used to read on baby websites that any mother who would leave her (immobile) infant in his carseat in the car OR house while she went out to get groceries was the worst mother alive. She was literally supposed to carry the baby with her to and fro, never leaving it alone. Leaving aside the total lack of consideration for single mothers who have no choice and can’t afford to “helicopter” like a richer, suburban mom with a partner, this is just craziness.
Congratulations! I’m sure you are SO relieved that’s it finally out, and SO thrilled/nervous/excited about the lifestyle shocks to come.
I already bought a copy for myself, and one for my children’s preschool library.

I was pretty disappointed by your interview on the Brian Lehrer show. Both you and Brian let that one guy vent for far too long about his long lost sister. Let him, in effect, take control of the whole segment. To top it off, your response to him sounded weak and uncertain.
I think you’d be better to have answers to these sorts of comments thought out in advance and ready to go. There’s always going to be somebody who had a horrible experience and if you let them walk over you, you undermine your own position about not overprotecting their kids.
Lenore, thanks for this site and the book! I just ordered it form amazon after someone sent me here to your blog. KUDOS to you! I was a free range kid, and I loved it. I am a work in progress on letting my kids have more freedom, but they are still somewhat young at 9, just 6, and 4.
I have already gotten looks from neighbors about letting them play in the front yard alone (*gasp*) and now I am letting them cross the street and play in the ankle-deep creek unsupervised. The horror! I let my nine year old stay home alone at times, and this summer he will be able to go to the library, the park and the grocery store as well. Hopefully, anyway, but I guess I should be worried about the cops picking him up and scolding me.
Anyway, ordered the book and I am looking forward to it. I am a Free Range Parent – YEAH!

I think what you posted made a great deal of sense. But, what about this? suppose you added a little information? I ain’t saying your content is not solid., but what if you added a headline to possibly get folk’s attention? I mean “Free-Range Kids” Book Published Today! FreeRangeKids is a little boring. You ought to look at Yahoo’s home page and see how they create post titles to grab viewers interested. You might add a related video or a related picture or two to grab readers interested about what you’ve written. Just my opinion, it might bring your blog a little bit more interesting.
