“Free-Range” is a great way to describe how we have raised our son. We have always discussed the internet and its dangers, had the computer in the living room until he felt that around 14 that he wanted more privacy.
In the end we allowed him to make his own choices without parental controls. He is 17 now, able to function on his own and making safe choices (for the most part…he is still a teenage boy and this is just an assumption, since I don’t snoop) in his internet use.

Bad stuff happens, you can’t protect your kids from everything. you could make them totally safe from perverts and such, make them always wear a helment, never let them outside without you and then end up hitting their head on your counter and dying. Stuff happens and it is better to let them spread their wings under you guidance so they know how real life works.

Speaking of NPR, Ayelet Waldman was on Fresh Air today. I only heard a little of it, but she was asked about parenting and her answers were philosophically VERY much in the Free Range Parenting mode. I wonder if anyone else heard her?

Wow. I only just discovered this website. I’ve only read three or four postings. Already, you are my hero. You’ve done the research I’m too lazy to do but it all supports the conclusion that I’ve always felt certain must be true.

I heard Ayelet Waldman. I turned it on near the end, right when she was talking about the parenting stuff. And I thought, “Wait, Lenore was on Talk of the Nation, which doesn’t even air on this station. So what IS this?” Then I heard who it was. It was an almost freaky coincidence, though.

This is not terribly important, but I just noticed the “a.m.” and “p.m.” on the comment times are reversed.

Lenore, I was disappointed. I thought you were going to go “Crossfire” with that attorney general! Too bad you didn’t have enough time to really take him to task. Why oh why do politicians have to talk in circles? He barely even made sense, he was trying so hard not to admit that the dangers on the internet are the same as in the real world – some places are dangerous and some not so much so.

    You, however, made sense!

Anyone have a direct link to the segment? Not just a like to npr, or the npr podcast.
