where you can find the basic rules for a ton of old-fashioned games, from jacks to marbles to the one that I always heard about but never knew what it was: Ringoleavio, which sounds like Hide & Go Seek meets The Green Berets. I’m psyched to show my kids this site and hope that they’ll go try the games out,  even though, even here, this will require some prying them away from their electronics. — Lenore

Ringoleavio sounds like Kick the Can. I remember going camping with my family of 4 girls and another family with 2 daughters and we played kick the can for hours. My sister got a huge cut on her knee from sliding in to kick the can and free the prisoners. There was a field next to our campsite and the bathrooms across the way so we had a lot of space to play in. It was one of my best memories of pure joy when camping.

I grew up in the outskirts of the Minneapolis suburbs where there were big yards that were largely wooded or swampy. We used to play a lot of Ghost in the Graveyard, which is sort of hide-and-seek at night in the woods. Sounds creepy now that I’ve seen “The Blair Witch Project.”

Sounds like fun! Great to see rules for some games I’m not familiar with. Might need my kids to drag out a few more kids from the neighborhood for some though. Great challenge.
This is great! The weather just started warming up here and my boys (and me) are so in the mood to stay outside and play.
Ringoleavio sounds a bit like Capture the Flag (which we — a whole neighborhood of kids of all ages — used to play).

Ringoleavio is Capture the Flag without the Flag! We still do this as adults on occasion. I am eagerly awaiting my son coming to the age where twighlight and early night is within reach of his bedtime. My social circle has a great game I am DYING to pass on to him and his friends.
Ninja Dodgeball; our special blend of Hide & Seek, Tag, and Dodgeball after sunset.
Players dress in dark colors/ black head to toe. A play structure or wooded area is used as the court, and a yellow squishy ball is used. One person who is It carries the ball, while the other players run and / or hide. When any player touches the ball they become It, whether they are hit with it, handed it, kick it, catch it, or occasionally tricked into sitting on it. It gives the players the chance to be sneaky while still running and playing.
